He was a man among men, a rugged representative of a seafaring wrecker, which he chose as an early profession. He sailed The Magnolia, a schooner. The captain parted company with “The Magnolia” in 1919. The great hurricane of that year claimed the schooner, when she was anchored offshore. He mastered other vessels until 1922 then chose other ways for his livelihood.

He farmed with Bubba Smart Atchinson at Rock Harbor in the Keys, worked various jobs in the Miami area and resettled back on the Isle of Bones.

He lived at 706 Carolina St. and became the proprietor of the Mascot Bar.

He measured 6 ft and tipped the scales at a muscular 175 lbs. and feared no man. He raised two separate families with two wives and was a strict, no-nonsense disciplinarian. He was spoken of by his offspring with reverence and respect when recollecting the many instances of their childhood with Captain Arthur A. Lowe.

He became a United States citizen in 1898.

Arthur Alese Lowe is the great-great-grandson of Captain Gideon Lowe and Nancy Ann Saunders.

Arthur Alese Lowe, Sr. passed away on June 26, 1943 (age 76) in Key West, Florida. He is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed.

  1. Thank you. He was my great-great grandfather. My father’s mother (Rowvena Hastwood Johnson) was the elder daughter of Amelia Emma, granddaughter of Arthur and Euphemia Jane.

  2. This is my Pa Lowe!! He was my great-great-great grandfather, and always talked about by my Nannie (great-grandfather) who was my great-grandmother. Thank you for this beautiful article!
