The family moved to Nassau in 1948. She was educated at the Seventh Day Adventist School, Easter Junioe and Easter Senior Schools in Nassau. Upon completion of her education, she worked at the Royal Bank of Canada, Palmdale Branch as secretary to the Manager Harry Louis. She later moved to work at various legal firms, including Higgs & Johnson, Holowesko & Co., Graham, Thompson & Co., and Frederick Gottlieb & Co. During her later years, she put her career on hold to take care of her aging parents. Dorothea never married.
Dorry and I connected on Facebook in 2018 over our mutual love of Bahamian genealogy. Over the years, we exchanged countless message and photos. She was always willing to help me piece together the puzzle of our ancestors.
Her sister Geanette recalls…
She attended Bible Truth Hall in her early years and Evangelistic Temple in her adult years in Nassau. In Abaco she attended Assemblies of God. She also assisted with missionary work and caretaking for the elderly. She loved to read Mills & Boon novels, but her favorite hobby was studying her Bible and witnessing to & discipling young Christians. She was a Prayer Warrior!
Alton R. Lowe recalls…
The first time I went to Nassau where I saw Dorry, I stayed with her parents, Uncle Gene and Aunt Myrt. Uncle Gene was the lighthouse keeper on what became Paradise Island. His daughter Dorry was a beautiful young when I saw her in Nassau, although she was born on Green Turtle Cay.
She was always in the top of her class and went on to being an executive secretary to several presidents of foreign banks, which were then an important part of the financial community in the Bahamas. When I started exhibiting my paintings annually in Nassau, she helped me with scheduling appointments and handled the sales of the paintings. We spent many happy times together and I often invited her to join me at the Buena Vista restaurant, and at the Ocean Club on Paradise Island, for special occasions. For a while, she lived in the house next to the Albert Lowe Museum on Green Turtle Cay where I saw her often.
During later years, we often discussed family genealogy and people we both knew, staying abreast of the changes taking place in various families in the country. We maintained a close friendship throughout her entire life. Dorry was a truly religious person and went out of her way to help family and friends. Shortly before her passing, she sent me an email which said simply, “I miss my family.” Dorry was a dear and loved friend and relative. I will miss her humour and wit. May she rest in peace.
Dorothea Elizabeth Hall passed away February 5, 2024 (age 79) in Nassau, New Providence.
