On October 9, 1935, Bertha married John Reuben Roberts (1915-2004) from Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. He is the son of Harry Roberts (1892-1976) and Estella Louise Lowe (1895-1927). They divorced in 1947.

  • James Willliam (1951)

The late Joan Hatfield recalled…

Mom’s first marriage was to John Rubin Roberts – they divorced, and she married James Lawrence Hatfield. They had 3 children: Joan, James (Jay) and Larry. We lived in Miami until 1957 and then we moved to Nassau to take care of my grandparents. We moved back to the United States in 1965. While in Nassau, I went to St. Thomas Moore and then to Aquinas College. Jay and Larry went to St. Thomas Moore as well.

When we first moved to Nassau, Mom and Dad opened up a pet store. I remember the monkey, turtles, parakeets and all pet supplies. Afterwards, they opened up a dry good store at the same place. When the horse track opened, Dad worked there at the ticket entrance. When the horse track closed, Dad helped mom in the store.

Lula Albertha ‘Bertha’ Hatfield née Roberts passed away on January 6, 1992 (age 75) in Ruskin, Florida.
