Zeddith Legran Saunders was born on April 27, 1920, in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco to George Henry Saunders (1894) and Hattie M. Roberts (1898-1975).
Her siblings included Dorothy, Ismae Eileen (1927)
In June 1942, she married Floyd Orazia Lowe (1919-2014) son of Edwin Jerome Lowe (1871-1932) and Alice Missouri Roberts (1878-1946).
Floyd Lowe in his autobiography recall…
They say Zeddith Saunders went to school with me but I really do not remember her. A few years after school I began to notice her and took a real interest. Back in those days, if you wanted to court a girl you had to write a letter to her parents and get permission. I wrote a letter but received no answer. Later I found out that her parents were not talking to each other. Her father, George Saunders, worked on the M/V Priscilla, the local mail boat. Eventually I received permission from her mother, Hattie.
Back then most of the boys could play a musical instrument, a banjo, mandolin or guitar. I played the guitar and when I went to visit Zeddith’s house, I would carry it and play hymns while she and her three sisters sang along. After a while, we became engaged. I wanted to buy a ring but Zeddith said she would like a watch. I told her I could not afford a watch and a ring so shed decided to have a watch.
We were engaged for six years and the time came for us to get married. I had spent two winter seasons, six months each time, with my brother Basil in Clearwater, Florida, where he had a charter boat business. He paid me two dollars a day to assist him and I had saved all my wages so Zeddith and I had enough money for the wedding.
Zeddith and I both attended the Brethren church but there was a split in the fellowship at that time that caused us to get married in the Methodist church on 30th June 1942, by Reverend Brown Sr.
Zeddith rarely used any form of make-up and wondered if she should wear any at our wedding. I told her no, she did not need it – she had real beauty.
Their children included Sandra Zeddith (1943), Floyd Fearnley (1945), Judy, Nigal, Deborah, Larry, Eugene
In the early hours of May 3, 2010 (age 90). Zeddith passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure, surrounded by all her children and with Floyd holding her hand. She was buried on Mother’s Day.
