Jeremiah Duncan ‘Dunc’ Lowe Sr was born on May 26, 1844, in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco to John Frederick Lowe and Mary Ann Sawyer.

Jeremiah DUNCan Lowe Sr, called Dunc, was my great-grandfather. Born 28 May 1844 at Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas, he died 4 May 1921 at Marsh Harbour, Abaco. He moved to Marsh Harbour when he married Eliza ‘Liza’ Agnes Sawyer, born 1861 -1913 Marsh Harbour.

Dunc Lowe, 5th of 10 children born to John Lowe and Mary Sawyer, remained at Abaco while his 9 siblings moved to Key West, Florida.

My father Clarie Lowe knew his grandparents who lived next door at Marsh Harbour. “A jack of all trades, he could turn his hand to do anything,” Clarie said. “He had no formal school attendance because he grew up lending a hand at the family plantation Conch Rocks, located near Angelfish Creek, on the north mainland of Great Abaco, near Green Turtle Cay, Abaco.” Intelligence overcame his lack of classroom studies. In his business ledger, he devised his own written symbols. “I watched him write,” Clarie said. “And he read his symbols.”

Jeremiah Duncan ‘Dunc’ Lowe Sr passed away on May 4, 1921 (age 76) and is buried at Marsh Harbour, Abaco.
