Jeannie’s early years were spent in the distinctive Triangle House, a beloved family home now known as Marantha Cottage, nestled in the heart of New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay. The house, with its unique architecture and cherished memories, was the center of her early childhood adventures and family life.

As Jeannie approached her teenage years, her family relocated to the Black Sound area, another picturesque area of the island. It was here Jeannie developed a close friendship.

The Tygarts, an American family from Georgia, often visited the island and developed a friendship with the Sands family over the decades. During the 1980s, the Tygart’s granddaughter Christy, who was close to Jeannie’s age, joined in on the family visits.

During these visits, Christy would stay in the Sands’ home. The two girls soon became kindred spirits. Christy shared one of the twin beds in Jeannie’s room, whispering stories late into the night and forging the bonds of a genuine friendship. Their days were filled with simple pleasures: leisurely walks to nearby Gilliam Bay, where they enjoyed the pristine beach, the sun-dappled water, and the laughter that only childhood companionship can bring. Back at home, they delighted in feeding the chickens in the backyard, turning everyday chores into shared adventures.

As time passed and the visits became less frequent, Jeannie and Christy found a way to maintain their connection. A pen pal relationship blossomed, with postcards and letters traversing the miles between Green Turtle Cay and Georgia. Through their written words, they continued to share their lives, dreams, and everyday happenings, keeping their friendship alive despite the distance.

An early note drawn by Jeannie and mailed to Christy.

Jeannie also attended the New Plymouth Gospel Chapel on Green Turtle Cay and loved singing in the youth choir.
