Norris Henry Bethel was born in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco on May 6, 1913, to Winer Henry Bethell (1876-1945) and Spero Elizabeth Roberts (1889-1920). His parents emigrated to Miami, Florida in 1918.

His siblings include Rosalind Kathleen (1909), Julia Loise (1911), Winer Henry Jr (1916)

On August 31, 1941, in Miami, Florida, Norris married Zelma Annabelle Wainscott (1916-2001) from Ocala, Florida. They had a son Norris Wayne Bethel (1945-2021).

Norris passed away on April 17, 1990 (age 76) in Ocala, Florida.
