In 1894, Charlotte married Henry Foster Roberts (1867-1938) son of John Roberts III and Elizabeth Lowe.

Their only child is Minnie Caroline (1904-1999).

Charlotte Elizabeth Lowe passed away on May 29, 1973 (age 99) at Green Turtle Cay, Abaco.

Estella Curry Lowe recalls…

Ma Charlotte played a very important role in my life. She took my father Wilbur Curry whose mother died during childbirth and raised him as her own. She was always very kind to my brother and me. I never knew she was not my biological grandmother until years later. I dearly loved Ma Charlotte.

I learned so much from Ma Charlotte and her daughter Minnie. They were always either quilting or crocheting new patterns. They made many Christmas and Easter dresses for me. Ma Charlotte was most happy sitting down to her old paddle sewing machine and even in her advanced age, she still sewed men’s work clothes

As a child, I remember her home was down near the point they called it – very near where the Mailboat came in each week. Her neighbors were Nick and Amy Roberts. Nick also had a popular bakery there, which was easily accessible to the boaters. As a young girl I would like to visit Ma Charlotte to watch the boats enter and leave.

Alton Lowe reflects…

She was a very charming lady. There is a photo of her baking bread at her outside rock oven. Her sewing machine and eyeglasses are also at the Albert Lowe Museum.

Colin Lowe reminisces…

I have many memories of visiting her during my summers at Green Turtle Cay. She was my great grandmother. She was a widow for many years (she lived 99 years and 10 months). I have often reflected on the changes she saw over that century although her personal life changed very little other than maybe an electric light instead of a kerosene lantern.

She was quite deaf most of the years I knew her but always had a sweet, gentle smile and a kind word. She had no TV or radio to pass the time – she sat in her wooden rocking chair sewing much of the day. She never modernized the way she dressed – such a simple life yet she seemed contented and at peace.

Photo was taken on her 96th birthday.
